When your future and freedom are at stake you want a lawyer with experience – one who knows what they are doing.

Some lawyers handle nothing but criminal cases, while others also handle other matters. Some criminal defense lawyers also only handle certain types of criminal cases – such as DWI, drugs, or white collar crimes. Our practice is devoted exclusively to criminal defense, and I have been representing citizens accused of crimes for thirty years. As a result of that experience we are intimately familiar with how the criminal justice system operates, and what it takes to successfully resolve even the most difficult cases.

To effectively represent a citizen accused a criminal defense attorney must have a variety of skills. Not surprisingly many cases require some detective work. The lawyer must know what is important in order to know what to look. We routinely use the services of private investigators, who are experts at finding people and locating evidence – something lawyers have not been trained to do.

A good lawyer must also know the law. That involves more than simply being able to read the statute and know what the State has to prove. To achieve the best result in each your lawyer must know the potential issues to look for, as well as legal options that may be used for the client’s benefits. I believe we have an advantage in this area because of the hundreds of criminal appeals and post-conviction cases I have handled over the years. As a result I have researched issues different issues, and have a working knowledge that many lawyers do not have. Few lawyers like to do legal research, which is a necessity in the appellate arena. Even if they recognize an issue, they likely do not research it as extensively as is required on appeal. Not only does this create familiarity with the different issues involved in cases, it also allows us to develop waysto use the law for the client’s benefits.

In recent years prosecutors have started using forensic evidence more often. In the past, such evidence has rarely been challenged. Part of the reason is that lawyers are not familiar with scientific principals, and accepted the opinions of experts with little question. In recent years though science has come under attack, and evidence that has been accepted for years is now being questioned. I have a special interest in forensic science and am one of the few lawyers who is a member of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. We handle a number of cases involving forensic issues, and vigorously contest all types of evidence.
