A Virginia man was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated after he was seen driving with a woman hanging so far out of his truck that she was banging her head on the sidewalk. When officers asked the man what was going on, he claimed he wasn’t aware of anything unusual occurring in his vehicle.

The bizarre incident happened earlier this week near Fredericksburg, Va., according to an article in the local paper. About 10:15 p.m.  Monday, a witness reported to deputies that he had seen the head and shoulders of a woman who was hanging out of a truck strike the pavement as the vehicle made a left turn. The lower half of the woman’s body was buckled into the truck by a seat belt, the article said.

After the turn, the truck continued for another 100 feet, with napkins and other debris spilling out, before the driver pulled into a cash advance store. When police got there, they found a 22-year-old woman who was unconscious and had numerous cuts, the article said.

One of the responding deputies said the truck’s driver, 51-year-old Jack Albert Dunstan Jr., strongly smelled of alcohol. He told officers that he was in the truck with two women when one of them opened the passenger side door and then closed it. He went on to say he didn’t know anyone was hanging out of his truck or that anything unusual was occurring, a deputy told the newspaper.
Dunstan was charged with DWI and taken to jail after refusing to take sobriety tests, a deputy said. The woman was treated for her injuries at a Virginia hospital.
